Box Score The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team fell in a Sunday afternoon SAA contest against the Hendrix Warriors in Conway, Arkansas, today, losing 16-3 and falling to 0-12 on the season overall and 0-4 in SAA play.
The Petrels hung in against the Warriors throughout the first quarter, as freshman middie Nathaniel Gillespie tallied a goal with 10:05 remaining in the first quarter to tie the game at the time. Hendrix did answer with three consecutive goals to pull out to a 4-1 lead at the end of the quarter, though, and they extended that in the second, posting seven consecutive markers in that period to enter halftime with an 11-1 lead.
Hendrix scored three more goals in the third period, putting their overall run at 13 consecutive goals. The Petrels did score a couple goals in the fourth quarter and held the score line to 2-2 for the period. They got a marker from sophomore attackman John Hood off an assist from junior attackman Andrew Houghton early in the quarter and Gillespie found the cage again late in the period off an assist from Hood.
Freshman goalie Lane Edwards recorded an impressive school-record 37 saves on 53 shots-on-goal faced. He also scooped a team-high 10 ground balls on the afternoon. For the game, Gillespie finished with a pair of goals on eight shots, five of them on target. He scooped eight ground balls, as well.
For the game, Hendrix outshot the Petrels 69-16, including 53-10 on goal. Hendrix won 20 of 22 faceoffs and scooped 65 ground balls to Oglethorpe's 36. Hendrix was also successful on 16 of 18 clear attempts to Oglethorpe's 19-of-35.
"Today was a tough day for us," said Oglethorpe head coach Nathan Young, "but we're looking forward to coming home for our final three games of the regular season. We hope everybody will come out to watch our first home game in a couple weeks next Saturday."
The Petrels will take on Centre Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Oglethorpe Track and Field. After that, they'll welcome Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps to campus the following weekend to round out their regular-season schedule.
