Box Score The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team went on the road for their first Southern Athletic Association contest away from home for the season on Saturday. They fell 18-2 to the homestanding Rhodes Lynx and fell to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in SAA play.
The homestanding Lynx jumped on the Stormy Petrels early, scoring seven goals over the opening 10 minutes and pushing out to a big advantage. At the end of the first half, they led 13-0.
The second half was much better for the Petrels, as they held Rhodes to five goals and scored two of their own. Junior midfielder Juliana Altman tallied a goal with 23:10 remaining in the second half, then came up with another late in the game. She buried a shot with 5:20 remaining to finish out the scoring.
Altman's two goals came on three shots, all of them placed on cage by the Oglethorpe midfielder. She also scooped a pair of ground balls and won a pair of draw controls. Freshman goalie Daniel Hoban recorded 11 saves on the afternoon while leading the squad in ground balls with five.
Rhodes outshot Oglethorpe 35-9, won 15 draw controls to the Petrels' six, won 25 ground balls to Oglethorpe's 17, and were 11 for 11 on clear attempts. The Petrels went 11 for 24 while forcing 15 Lynx turnovers. However, they committed 26 of their own.
"Today was a tough game for us," said Oglethorpe head coach Marissa Giannerini. "Rhodes is a very good team, so I give them all the credit for the result. Still, away at Rhodes might wind up being the most difficult game on our schedule, so it'll be important for us to bounce back headed into this week's home game over spring break."
The Petrels will take on Sweet Briar on Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. on the Oglethorpe Track and Field. After that, they won't play again until Wednesday, March 23, when they travel to Alabama to take on Montevallo at 6 p.m. Eastern.
