Box Score The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team fell to the homestanding Berry Vikings Wednesday night in Mount Berry, Georgia, dropping the contest 15-3. The result dropped the Stormy Petrels to 3-11 on the season overall and 0-5 in SAA play.
The Vikings got off to a good start, outscoring the Petrels 9-2 in the opening half of play. Oglethorpe did respond early with a game-tying goal from senior midfielder Juliana Altman, evening the score at a goal apiece, but Berry scored four goals in a row to build a 5-1 lead with 16:17 remaining in the opening half of play. Senior midfielder Tate Davis scored to make it 5-2 with 14:33 remaining, but the Vikings ended the half on four consecutive goals to build a 9-2 lead headed into the break.
Berry continued their run into the second half, as they tallied five consecutive goals to build a 14-2 lead with 22:10 remaining in the contest. The Petrels played solid defense from that point, only allowing one additional goal, but the damage had already been done. The Petrels did tally another goal of their own when senior midfielder Sydney Sparks scored on a free position shot with 6:08 remaining.
The Petrels got a goal apiece from Altman, Davis and Sparks, and got a couple ground balls each from freshman defender Sedaries Mathis and freshman goalie Daniel Hoban. Hoban made 15 saves for the Petrels, as well.
Over the course of the game, the Vikings outshot the Petrels 37-8, including 30-6 on goal. Berry accrued 14 draw controls to Oglethorpe's six while proving successful on 13 of 16 clear attempts. The Petrels turned the ball over 26 times to Berry's 18 while the Vikings scooped 14 ground balls to the Petrels' 10.
"This was not a great night for us," said Oglethorpe head coach Marissa Giannerini, "but we'll come back and try to end our season on a high note Saturday against Centre. I'm proud of the way this team has played all year long, and I think everyone's looking forward to showing their best on Saturday."
The Petrels will take on Centre in Danville, Kentucky, Saturday at 1 p.m. in their final game of the regular season.
