Box Score The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team was competitive with the homestanding Centre Colonels throughout the first half, but Centre pulled away in the second half for an 18-6 victory Saturday afternoon in Danville, Kentucky. The Stormy Petrels finish the season with a 3-12 overall record and an 0-6 mark in SAA play.
Centre got off to a very good start, pushing out to a 6-0 lead early in the contest. The Petrels responded, though, scoring six goals of their own in the first half. They answered directly with three consecutive goals, as senior Juliana Altman, freshman midfielder Madison Goss, and senior midfielder Sydney Sparks found the cage consecutively to make it 6-3 with 15:01 remaining in the opening half. Centre answered with three consecutive goals again, building a 9-3 lead with 10:25 left in the period, but Oglethorpe came back with a pair of goals from Sparks, one of which came off an assist by senior Tate Davis, making it 11-5 at halftime.
The Colonels scored seven of the eight goals in the second half, pushing out to an 18-6 victory. The Petrels did pick up a goal from Goss, her second of the game, who finished off a pass from senior Caitin Ayres with 15:35 remaining in the game.
Sparks finished with a hat trick in her final collegiate game, while Goss picked up two goals in the contest. Senior defender Morgan McGhee, freshman goalie Daniel Hoban, and Altman led the team with four ground balls apiece, while Hoban stopped 14 shots on the afternoon.
Centre outshot the Petrels 40-13 overall and 32-8 on goal. They also outdrew the Petrels 20-6. Oglethorpe picked up 19 ground balls to Centre's 16, and was 1 for 2 on free position shots. The Petrels were successful on 16 of 26 clear attempts while Centre succeeded on 16 of 19.
"Today wasn't a great result, but I'm proud of the way this team competed all year long," said Oglethorpe head coach Marissa Giannerini. "This group built a stepping stone for this program that will continue to move us forward into the future. We continue to take steps, and in the years to come, we'll look back on what this team and this senior class did for this program."
