Box Score The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team used a very solid second quarter to stay in the game with the visiting Centre Colonels through the opening 30 minutes of play Saturday afternoon at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. However, Centre pulled away in the second half for a 24-5 win, dropping the Stormy Petrels to 0-13 on the season overall and 0-5 in SAA play.
Centre jumped out to a big lead, scoring all seven goals occurring in the opening 15 minutes of play. However, the Petrels fought back in the second quarter. Though the Colonels opened with a pair of goals to start the period, the Petrels responded with three of the next four markers. Freshman middie Thomas O'Berry scored the goal that started the run with 11:12 remaining in the quarter. After a Centre goal, sophomore attackman John Hood and freshman middie Nathaniel Gillespie responded with back-to-back markers to make it 10-3 with 7:48 left in the quarter. Gillespie would follow with two more goals before the end of the half, cutting Centre's lead to 12-5 going into the break.
However, the Colonels responded in the third quarter, reeling off 10 straight. Bridging into the fourth quarter, Centre scored 12 unanswered goals in the second half, pulling to a 24-5 victory.
Freshman goalie Lane Edwards stopped 13 Centre shots on the day, breaking the school's single-season record for saves. His 197 saves on the season place him above the previous mark of 187. Meanwhile, Gillespie racked up another hat trick to draw him ever closer to the single season record for goals scored. He put all four of his shots on goal and scooped three ground balls, and is now just two goals short of setting a new record.
Centre outshot the Petrels 52-12 and won 22 of their 32 faceoff attempts. The Petrels turned the ball over 25 times to Centre's 16.
"This result was not the one we wanted," said Oglethorpe head coach Nathan Young, "but we've got a couple more games next weekend, so we'll look to come back with solid performances against Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps."
The Petrels will take on Birmingham-Southern Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. before welcoming Millsaps to the Oglethorpe Track and Field next Sunday at noon.
