The Oglethorpe women's tennis team found themselves in a tight battle with a Millsaps team currently ranked 17th in the Atlantic South region Sunday morning in Jackson, Mississippi, but the homestanding Majors prevailed 5-4 in the end. The result dropped the Stormy Petrels to 8-8 on the season overall and 0-3 in SAA play.
The Petrels took one of the three doubles matches to start the morning, with freshman Shannon Cruz and sophomore Halley Sickling taking it to their opponents and winning 8-2. Freshman Caroline Johnson and senior Katherine Walker fell 8-2 against a very tough duo at No. 1 doubles while junior Ingrid Wilcox and senior MaryAnne Hafen fell 8-5 in a tight contest at No. 3. This meant that the Majors held a 2-1 lead going into the singles portion of the competition.
In singles, Johnson fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 and Cruz did the same 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2, quickly making the score 4-1 and putting Millsaps within a point of winning the dual match. The Petrels responded, though. Sickling came through with another victory at No. 6, winning 6-3, 7-5, while Walker, Hafen and Wilcox went down a set and came back to force their respective matches into third sets. The Petrels won two of them, with Walker prevailing 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 and Wilcox coming through 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 at No. 4. The Majors took the No. 5 match, though, as Hafen lost 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to secure the dual match victory for the Majors.
"I'm proud of this team for the way they bounced back from a loss at Birmingham-Southern on Saturday," said Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell. "We've played two very good SAA teams 5-4 now. We lost to both Berry and Millsaps, but I think it proves that we're improving every match and are clearly competitive with these teams. We'll see if we can pick up a win next weekend against either Rhodes or Hendrix."
The Petrels will take on Rhodes Saturday and go against Hendrix Sunday. Both matches will be at 9 a.m. and will take place on the Downing Howell Courts.
