Women's Tennis Closes out Fall Season with 8-1 Win over Oxford

The Oglethorpe women's tennis team defeated junior college side Oxford 8-1 on Friday in Oxford, Georgia, closing out their fall season in excellent fashion.

The Stormy Petrels swept doubles competition, as senior Caroline Johnson and sophomore Hannah Dattilo won 8-3 at No. 1 to kick things off. Junior Shannon Cruz and sophomore Taylor Cranford won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles, while senior Halley Sickling and sophomore Elizabeth Bielicki won 8-1 at No. 3, giving the Petrels a 3-0 lead headed into singles.

In singles competition, Johnson played well in defeating her opponent 7-5, 6-3. Dattilo did the same at No. 2, winning 7-5, 6-0. Cranford dominated her opponent at No. 3, winning 6-1, 6-1, while freshman Lisette Phillips won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. Junior Delaney Abood took down her No. 6 opponent, winning 6-3, 6-4. The only loss by the Petrels on the day came from Cruz, who was locked in a tightly-contested three-set match.

The victory allowed the Petrels to close the fall season on an excellent note. They'll return for the spring season on Feb. 24, when they take on Rose-Hulman.
