The Oglethorpe women's tennis team earned its second sweep in as many days in their home opener Thursday afternoon at the Downing Howell Courts, defeating the visiting Piedmont Lions 9-0 to improve to 2-0 on the young season. 

The Stormy Petrels got off to an excellent start in doubles, putting themselves up 3-0 headed to the singles portion of the competition. They got an 8-5 win from junior Caroline Johnson and freshman Hannah Dattilo, the No. 8 doubles combination in the Atlantic South region. That was followed up with an 8-4 win by sophomores Shannon Cruz and Delaney Abood at No. 2, and an 8-3 triumph by freshman Taylor Cranford and senior Ingrid Wilcox at No. 3.

The Petrels continued their dominance in singles, as well. Johnson took out her opponent 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1, and Dattilo followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2, clinching the dual match for Oglethorpe. The home side continued to pour it on from there, though, as Cranford defeated her opponent 7-5, 6-0 at No. 3, and Cruz won by the same score at No. 4. Wilcox took down the No. 5 match 6-1, 6-1 and Abood did the same at No. 6.

"It's nice to be 2-0," said Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell. "It's been a good start to this early stretch of our season where we're going up against USA South teams. We've got some momentum now and have a good rhythm going, and hopefully that will continue on Monday."

The Petrels will host another USA South team, Agnes Scott, Monday at 4 p.m. on the Downing Howell Courts. After that, they'll travel the top of Lookout Mountain in northwest Georgia for a showdown with Covenant Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. before heading out on their spring break trip the following weekend.
