Men's Lacrosse Falls to SAA Opponent Hendrix, 26-5

The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team fell to SAA opponent Hendrix Sunday afternoon at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, 26-5. The defeat dropped the Stormy Petrels to 1-12 on the season overall and 0-3 in SAA play. 

The Petrels jumped out to a 1-0 lead early on, as junior attackman Andrew Houghton tallied a man-up goal with 10:40 remaining in the opening quarter. Hendrix scored four straight goals before sophomore attackman Nathaniel Gillespie answered with a goal of his own to make it 4-2 with 5:37 remaining. The Warriors scored twice to end the quarter, though, then eight straight in the second quarter to build a 14-2 advantage at the halftime break.

Hendrix added seven more goals over the third quarter to push their advantage further. Oglethorpe did come back with three goals in the fourth, tallying them in a row from the 13:04 to the 10:32 mark. Gillespie scored the first one unassisted, then sophomore middie Tyler Stridiron added another unassisted tally with 12:33 remaining. Sophomore middie Sulton Rahim ended the run off an assist from Houghton.

Gillespie finished with a pair of goals, while Stridiron added 6 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers. Sophomore defenseman Andrew Kwapil recorded 6 ground balls of his own. Freshman goalie Sean Merritt finished with 22 saves on the afternoon.

Hendrix outshot the Petrels 71-17, including 48-7 on goal. The Petrels forced 14 turnovers while committing 23 of their own. The Warriors collected 60 ground balls to Oglethorpe's 21. Oglethorpe completed 13 of 17 clear attempts and was 1-for-4 on extra-man opportunities.

The Petrels will hit the road to take on Centre in Danville, Kentucky, Saturday at 11 a.m. They'll then return home to the Oglethorpe Track and Field to take on Sewanee at 3 p.m. Sunday.
