Women's Soccer Knocks off Millsaps to Earn First Conference Victory of Season

Box Score

The Oglethorpe women's soccer team outplayed the homestanding Millsaps Majors Friday evening in Jackson, Mississippi, and got their reward with a second-half goal proving enough to lift them to a 1-0 SAA road victory. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 4-8 on the season overall and 1-2 in SAA play.

The Petrels outshot the Majors 11-6 over the course of the opening half, but neither team was able to dent the scoreboard over the opening 45 minutes. Oglethorpe broke through in the second half, though. They took a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute. Freshman midfielder Grace Henderson collected a pass from fellow freshman midfielder Tress Southard and put it past Millsaps goalkeeper Alyssa McCarron to give her team a goal advantage.

Oglethorpe continued to push into the second half, outshooting Millsaps 6-3 over the final 45 minutes. Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Bolas made a big save with just under eight minutes to go to preserve the lead, and the Petrels held on for the 1-0 victory.

Bolas recorded 4 saves to earn the shutout victory.

Over the course of the game, Oglethorpe outshot Millsaps 17-9, including a 10-4 margin in shots on goal.

The Petrels will be back in action on Sunday from Alabama, where they'll take on hosts Birmingham-Southern at 1 p.m. Eastern. After that, they'll return home for their final two home games of the regular season against Hendrix and Rhodes.
