The Oglethorpe women's tennis team continued it's solid play Saturday morning in defeating Rhodes, 8-1. They swept all three doubles matches and won five of six singles matches in moving their overall record to 7-4, and their SAA record to 3-0. They've won five matches in a row and haven't lost since their spring break trip in early March.
Despite losing at No. 2 singles, the Petrels were able to take the other five singles matches without dropping a set, highlighted by Johnson's 6-2, 7-6 (1) win at No. 1 over Rhodes' Dasha Safarian, the 16th-ranked player in the Atlantic South region. Cruz (6-1, 6-3) and Crawford (6-3, 6-1) picked up solid wins at Nos. 3 and 4 singles. Junior Delaney Aboud breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5, while Sickling rounded things out at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Head coach
Peter Howell commented after the match: "I thought the women played extremely well today, especially
Caroline Johnson. She and Hannah gave us a great lift taking No. 1 doubles over a very good team. Caroline played her most complete singles match of the year in taking out Safarian, who's regionally ranked. It's great to be 3-0 at this point in SAA play, but we have a very tough trip to ranked Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps next weekend."
The Petrels will hit the road for the next several matches, taking on Piedmont on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in Demorest, followed by SAA matches at Birmingham-Southern and Millsaps on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
