Men's lacrosse falls to Sewanee in SAA opener

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team faced a tough Sewanee team in their SAA opener Saturday afternoon at the Oglethorpe Track and Field and, despite playing the visiting Tigers evenly over the second and third quarters, fell 20-4. The loss dropped the Stormy Petrels to 4-5 on the season overall and 0-1 in SAA play.

The Petrels played the Tigers tough over the middle 30 minutes of the contest, getting outscored just 5-3 over that stretch. However, Sewanee tallied a 15-1 margin over the course of the first and fourth quarters, allowing them to secure the 16-goal win.

The Tigers shut out Oglethorpe 7-0 over the opening 15 minutes, but the Petrels tallied their first goal of the game with 9:56 left in the second. Sophomore attackman Tyler Rover found the net to make it 8-1. Sewanee scored the final two goals of the half to lead 10-1 heading to the break, but the Petrels started the third quarter with consecutive goals. Sophomore middie Brian Green finished off an assist from freshman middie Michael Burdge with 13:43 left in the period, then fellow freshman middie Trevon Burkhead added an unassisted goal at the 10:15 mark. That cut the Sewanee lead to 10-3.

However, the Tigers ran off 10 consecutive goals to put the game away. Rover scored his second goal of the game with 35 seconds left, though, finishing off a feed from Burkhead.

Rover finished the game with a pair of goals and three ground balls, while Burkhead finished with a goal and an assist. Junior attackman Cameron Ritter led the team with four ground balls. Freshman goalie Addison Irwin made 21 saves on the day.

Sewanee outshot Oglethorpe 41-13 on goal, scooped 58 ground balls to the Petrels' 24, and were successful on 4 of 9 extra-man opportunities. Oglethorpe was successful on 13 of 24 clear attempts.

The Petrels will be back in action Friday at 7 p.m. when they welcome Rhodes to the Oglethorpe Track and Field. After that, they'll host Hendrix on Senior Day at noon on Sunday, March 31.
