Men's lacrosse falls to Rhodes 18-2

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team fell to the visiting Rhodes Lynx 18-2 Friday night at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. The Stormy Petrels stayed in the game over the opening 30 minutes, trailing Rhodes just 4-2 after the first quarter and 9-2 headed into halftime. However, the Lynx blanked the Petrels in the second half and scored nine more goals of their own. The loss dropped Oglethorpe to 4-6 on the season overall and 0-2 in SAA play.

The Petrels scored the game's opening goal, as freshman middie Michael Burdge drove to the goal and put one past the Rhodes goalie with 8:19 left in the opening quarter. The Lynx answered with three straight over the next six minutes, but the Petrels got another marker with 2:18 left as junior middie Jack Brand scored another unassisted goal to make it 3-2. It was the last goal the Petrels would score, however.

After scoring a goal to end the first, the Lynx scored 14 more times over the course of the game for the final 16-goal margin.

Freshman goalie Addison Irwin collected an impressive 23 saves in the game on the 41 shots on goal he faced.

The Lynx outshot the Petrels 41-4 on goal and 76-9 total. They also won 19 of 22 faceoffs and forced 38 Oglethorpe turnovers while committing 19 themselves. Rhodes also more than doubled up Oglethorpe on ground balls, collecting 54 to the Petrels' 24.

The Petrels will be back in action Sunday afternoon when they welcome Hendrix to the Oglethorpe Track and Field on Senior Day. The Petrels will celebrate the careers of defenders Jibril Stapleton and Andrew Kwapil before the game, while is scheduled to get started at noon.
