Box Score The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team hung tough against a quality Piedmont team Wednesday night at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, but a late comeback from a 3-goal deficit came up a goal short in a 12-11 loss to the visiting Lions. The defeat dropped the Stormy Petrels to 1-2 on the season overall.
After trailing by three goals early, Piedmont came back by scoring five of the first seven goals in the second half over the opening 20 minutes of the period. Sophomore midfielder Tatyana Harris and freshman midfielder Kendall White tallied goals for the Petrels during that stretch, but the Lions built a 12-9 lead with just under 12 minutes remaining. The Petrels started to respond, though, pulling back a goal when senior attacker Jill Czaplinski took a pass from sophomore midfielder Jalina Rodriguez and finished past the visiting goalie to make it 12-10 with 5:16 remaining. White followed up with an unassisted goal at the 4:26 mark, drawing the Petrels to within a goal and giving them a chance down the stretch. They played 12-on-11 for 2 minutes late, as Piedmont had a player pick up a yellow card, but the Piedmont goalie was able to turn away every shot the Petrels fired over the final minutes, preserving their one-goal win.
The home side built as much as a three-goal lead in the first half. They scored three goals in a row and five of six during one stretch, getting a pair of tallies from freshman attacker Mikaela Carlsen and two more from Czaplinski to take a 5-2 lead at the 12:03 mark. The Lions came back with the final three goals of the period, though, turning a three-goal deficit at the 4:15 mark into a 7-7 tie at halftime.
Czaplinski finished with four goals on four shots, while White added a hat trick and three ground balls. Senior defender Dreshona Mapps-Whitmore led all participants with six ground balls. Senior goalie Jordan Chandler added 14 saves on 26 shots faced.
The Petrels will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Montgomery, Alabama, to take on Huntingdon at 3 p.m. Eastern.
