Baseball sweeps doubleheader from DePauw

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Oglethorpe baseball team won a pair of games over the DePauw Tigers, their former rivals out of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, Sunday at Anderson Field. They defeated the visitors 10-3 in the opener and 5-3 in the nightcap to improve to 3-5 on the young season.

The Stormy Petrels jumped all over DePauw early in Game 1, tallying 5 runs in the opening inning. Freshman center fielder Carter Guarino led off the inning with a double to right and was followed by junior second baseman Alex Featherstone, who drove in the run with a double down the left field line. Sophomore left fielder Will Arnold was hit by a pitch and Featherstone scored on an error a batter later, making it 2-0. Junior designated hitter Ian Wilson followed with a double over the center fielder's head, scoring Arnold and junior catcher Alec Babb, who reached on the error. Wilson came around to score on the play, as well, with the help of a couple Tiger errors. That gave the Petrels a 5-0 lead with nobody out. After another DePauw error, their fifth of the inning, they were able to get out of it.

The Petrels added more on in the third, though. Wilson reached on an error, sophomore shortstop Billy Finch was hit by a pitch, and freshman first baseman Parker Hildebrecht walked, loading the bases with nobody out. Junior right fielder Shota Barbeau scored Wilson on a sacrifice fly, then the Petrels sandwiched a run-scoring balk between a pair of RBI singles from Guarino and Featherstone. The Petrels ended the inning up 9-0.

The visitors answered with a pair of runs in the fourth and a single tally in the sixth, but the Petrels got one of those runs back on an RBI single from Babb in the bottom of the sixth.

Oglethorpe sophomore right-hander Jonathan Haab was outstanding to improve to 2-0 on the season. He went six innings and struck out 11 DePauw batters, allowing just 3 runs on five hits. Featherstone enjoyed his second consecutive 3-for-4 game, delivering a pair of doubles, two RBIs and 2 runs scored.

The Petrels fell behind early in the second game as DePauw took a 3-0 lead in the third inning. The home side came right back with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning, though. Finch singled up the middle, senior right fielder Sam Buchanan doubled to the right-center gap, and Guarino walked, loading the bases with nobody out. Featherstone followed with a sacrifice fly to right field and, two batters later, Babb brought everybody home with a 3-run home run over the left field fence. The Petrels led 4-3, then added another run in the seventh on a wild pitch.

Senior left-hander Kyle Babb got his first win of the season in relief, delivering two innings of scoreless ball while allowing only a single hit. Senior right-hander Dylan Childress earned his first save of the season, pitching the ninth and allowing just one hit while striking out three.

The Petrels will next take the field Wednesday evening at 5 p.m., when they travel to take on LaGrange.
