ATLANTA—Oglethorpe women's tennis sent a handful of Stormy Petrels to the ITA Regional to mark the start and finish to the brief fall slate. Lily Allyene posted the top singles result for the team with a pair of wins in three matches, while Allyssa Merletti and Izzy Forster had the top doubles result with two wins in four matches.
"I thought we looked good for not having played any matches leading up to the ITA regionals," said Head Coach Paul Danielson. "We missed the John McWilliams Invitational because of bad weather so we were not as match tough as I would have liked, but both teams have been practicing really hard this fall and it showed in the matches. We had several good wins."
Allyene, a freshman from Boca Raton, Florida, defeated Piedmont's M. Vasher in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, and went 1-1 against Southern Athletic Association member Sewanee. This included a come-from-behind win over Gracie Hughes where Allyene lost the first set 6-3 but bounced back to win sets two and three, both 6-3.
Merletti and Forster teamed up in doubles action for a couple of wins. The pair defeated Methodist's Lawrence and Kidd 8-6 and Piedmont's Moody and Gish 8-4.
Merletti went 1-2 on the singles side, defeating Belhaven's K. Un by only dropping one game. Forster also posted mixed results with one easy win and one close loss among her three singles matches. She defeated Methodist's J. Lawrence 6-0, 6-2 but fell to Methodist's M. Kidd 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.
In other action, Sydney Dattilo defeated Belhaven's K. Lwin 6-1, 6-0 in her 1-2 effort, and Brianna Ali defeated Piedmont's Anna Lassiter 6-1, 6-1 in her 1-1 effort.
Oglethorpe is set to compete next after the winter break as the Stormy Petrels open with Covenant on Saturday, Feb. 19, at home.
