ATLANTA—Daniel Cohen posted three singles wins, Michael Allen and Tony Molinet posted two singles wins, and Cameron Burkes and Zoe Raymond posted a perfect record in doubles to highlight Oglethorpe's results at the ITA Regional. The event served as the Stormy Petrels' lone competition of the fall semester as they prepare for the full slate next spring.
The Petrels are coming off a championship season after winning the Southern Athletic Association last season for the first time in history and advancing to the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship.
"I thought we looked good for not having played any matches leading up to the ITA regionals," said Head Coach Paul Danielson. "We missed the John McWilliams Invitational because of bad weather so we were not as match tough as I would have liked, but both teams have been practicing really hard this fall and it showed in the matches. We had several good wins."
Cohen, an All-SAA second team honoree last spring, went 3-1 on the week, posting two of his three wins in straight sets: 6-2, 6-2 over Belhaven's K. Smileye and 6-0, 6-3 over Rhodes' D. Phillips. Cohen also outlasted fellow SAA member Birmingham Southern's W. Dotson 7-6, 4-6, 6-0.
Allen went 2-1 for the week and took each of his wins in easy fashion. He defeated Piedmont's L. Galarza 6-0, 6-1 and Covenant's A. Graham 6-4, 6-1.
Molinet posted similar success in his singles matches by defeating Covenant's Cortman and Millsaps' A. Gardner, both by scores of 6-4, 6-0.
Burkes and Raymond posted the best doubles results for Oglethorpe with dominating wins over Millsaps and Piedmont. They defeated the former (Jackson/St. Martins) 8-0 and the latter (Traylor/Van Order) 8-1.
In other singles action, Burkes split his matches with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Methodist's Q. McNamara representing his win. Raymond, an All-SAA first team selection last season, went 1-2 in his singles effort with his win coming over Covenant's Ethan Gibson, 6-1, 6-0.
Oglethorpe is set to compete next after the winter break as the Stormy Petrels open with Covenant on Saturday, Feb. 19, at home.
