Chambers scores 1,000th career point with Petrels' win

Box Score

ATLANTA—On Thursday afternoon, the Oglethorpe men's basketball team faced Piedmont University and secured another win with a final score of 81-66. This brings the Petrels' record to 7-3 for the season.

Dimetri Chambers scored his 1,000th career point with 15:24 left in the second half. Chambers accomplished this feat in 45 games, and this was his 30th game scoring 20 or more points. Chambers finished with a team high 20 points on 7-for-15 shooting.

"Congratulations to Demitri on reaching the 1,000-point club here at Oglethorpe," said Head Coach Philip Ponder after the win. "That's our second guy to join the club in the past three games. The fact that Demitri has done it in less than two full seasons makes it even more impressive."

Chambers follows Lane Foster into the 1,000-point club. Foster scored his 1,000th point on Dec. 17.

Carlos Sone contributed a huge effort with 12 rebounds and five assists with only one turnover along with seven points, one block and three steals. Other contributors included Will Koch with 18 points on 6-for-8 shooting and Uba Ezigbo with 18 points and five rebounds.

Oglethorpe dominated the first half of the game with a 22-7 run over the last eight minutes to pull into a 48-30 halftime lead.

Within the second half, Piedmont battled back to cut it to four several times, the last of which was around the nine-minute mark, until an 8-2 run over two minutes helped Oglethorpe pull away one final time. Chambers, Ezigbo and Foster all scored on that run.

"I thought we played a great first half," Ponder added. "I loved our intensity on defense and our offensive execution. I'd like to have the first five minutes of the second half back. We kind of gave them some life and let them back in it. But after they cut it to four, I thought we responded well, so I think that was good for us in terms of being able to respond to someone's best punch."

The Petrels will return to their home court again on Sunday to face Emory at 3 p.m.
