The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team fought hard in a tight matchup with the Averett Cougars Saturday afternoon in Danville, Virginia, but the home side built a three-goal lead in the fourth quarter which proved just enough to hold off the Stormy Petrels 7-6.

The teams traded goals in the opening minute of the contest, with sophomore attackman Jazz Washington tallying the opener for the Petrels at the 14:08 mark. Fellow sophomore attackman Quade Bedgood also scored at the 4:51 mark and Averett led 3-2 at the end of the first quarter. The teams each scored a goal in the second quarter, with sophomore middie Hinton Chandler scoring at the 3:10 mark. The Cougars led 4-3 at the halftime break.

Averett went up three goals early in the third quarter, but Bedgood brought the visitors back to within two with 2:58 left in the period off an assist from junior goalie Addison Irwin. The home side went back up 7-4 with 11:44 left in the fourth quarter, but the Petrels began to mount a comeback. Bedgood finished off an assist from Washington at the 10:50 mark, making the score 7-5. Washington scored an unassisted goal of his own with just 2:58 left, making the score 7-6. The Petrels had several chances on goal in the final three minutes, but couldn't quite get any past the Averett goalie.

Bedgood finished with three goals and Washington two, while freshman middie Ty Freeman caused five turnovers in the defeat. Irwin tallied 11 saves.

The Petrels face off against Brevard Friday night at 7 p.m. from the Oglethorpe Track and Field.
