Box Score The Oglethorpe women's lacrosse team got their season off to a fine start Tuesday evening at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, running away from the Huntingdon Hawks 13-4 by outscoring them 8-0 in the second half. After three separate cancelations for COVID-19 protocol and weather, the start to the Stormy Petrels' season proved worth the wait.
The home side tallied the first four goals of the contest, scoring three of them in the opening eight minutes. Freshman midfielder Kaitlynn Alford tallied the opener just two-and-a-half minutes into the game on a free position shot, and sophomore midfielder Kendall White followed with another free position shot just past the 24-minute mark. Junior attacker Samanda Cox scored next, and Alford scored another goal with 12:16 left in the first half, giving Oglethorpe a 4-0 lead.
The Hawks answered back with four of the next five goals before halftime, however. An unassisted marker from sophomore attacker Mikaela Carlsen was Oglethorpe's lone reprieve, and they led 5-4 at the break.
The Petrels dominated the second half, though. Freshman attacker Ally Moir scored three times in the period, and Carlsen tallied two more. Cox picked up a free position goal and an assist, while junior midfielder Jalina Rodriguez also tallied a goal and an assist. Junior attacker Taty Harris scored the other Petrel goal.
Moir and Carlsen both finished with three goals, while senior goalie Jordan Chandler recorded nine saves on the evening.
The home side outshot Huntingdon 28-13 on goal, and they forced 37 Hawk turnovers while converting on 14 of 18 clear attempts. The Petrels also picked up 30 ground balls to Huntingdon's 18.
The Petrels are scheduled to be back in action Saturday, when they travel to Alabama to take on Division II side Montevallo at 12:30 p.m.
