Women's soccer hangs tough against Centre, but falls 2-0 to open season

Box Score

The Oglethorpe women's soccer team found themselves in a tough matchup to open their season Saturday against Centre Colonels at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. The visitors eventually scratched a couple goals in the second half for a 2-0 win, though.

The Stormy Petrels held their opponent scoreless in the opening half, playing tenaciously on the defensive end of the field and not allowing Centre to dent the scoreboard despite firing 15 shots. Oglethorpe freshman goalkeeper Haley Lowell tallied five saves in the first half and the score remained tied 0-0 through the first 45 minutes.

Centre finally found their way onto the scoreboard in the 46th minute, scoring 30 seconds into the second period. They added another in the 71st minute, building a 2-0 lead. Meanwhile, Lowell made four more saves in the second half for nine in all.

The Petrels return to action Friday at 1 p.m. when they host Rhodes at the Oglethorpe Track and Field.
