The Oglethorpe men's tennis team responded to a tough 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Centre Colonels Saturday by bouncing back and beating the same team 6-3 Sunday at the Howell Courts. The win improved the Stormy Petrels to 2-1 on the season.
After the Colonels swept the doubles competition on Saturday, the Petrels took two of three doubles matches on Sunday. Seniors Calvin Schneider and Walker Benson make quick work of their opponents 8-3 in the No. 2 match while freshmen Daniel Cohen and Cameron Burkes outlasted their opponents 8-7 in the No. 3 match, winning the tiebreaker 7-3.
Centre quickly tied the match 2-2 by winning on the top singles line, but the Petrels started rolling off wins from there. Schneider won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 3; senior Zoe Raymond took the No. 5 match 6-2, 6-1; and freshman Cameron Burkes clinched the victory in the dual match with a 7-6, 6-1 triumph, winning the first-set tiebreaker 7-1. Freshman Daniel Cohen came through with a win for the Petrels at No. 4 to add an extra point to Oglethorpe's ledger, taking the match 6-2, 6-3.
Though it came against SAA opponent Centre, the win does not count as a win in an SAA contest. The SAA schedule this year will feature back-to-back matches between the same teams on Saturday and Sunday, but in the interest of keeping the schedule a single round-robin, the Saturday match will be the only one that counts toward the conference standings.
Nevertheless, the Petrels went back over .500 on the young season in terms of overall record, and they'll now get set to host Rhodes in the same format Saturday and Sunday from the Howell Courts.
