Women's soccer falls on extra-time penalty kick

Box Score

The Oglethorpe women's soccer team closed their season with a tough loss Sunday in Jackson, Mississippi, falling 2-1 to the homestanding Millsaps Majors in the second period of extra time. The result meant the Stormy Petrels finished the season 0-6.

The two teams traded penalty kicks late in the contest. With Millsaps up 1-0, the Petrels won a penalty in the 83rd minute and junior defender Lauren Kirby stepped up to take it. She buried it past Major goalkeeper Alyssa McCarron to tie the game 1-1 and send it into extra time. Neither team scored in the first additional stanza, but Millsaps won a penalty kick of their own in the 107th minute, just over three minutes from the point where the contest would've ended in a draw. Millsaps' Heather Hembree finished the game off with the golden goal, handing Oglethorpe their sixth loss of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Haley Lowell had a lot of work to do and was equal to the task for the vast majority of the afternoon, stopping 10 Millsaps efforts on goal. The Millsaps goalkeeper saved seven of the eight shots on goal the Petrels sent her way, however.

Millsaps outshot the Petrels 8-4 in the first half but Oglethorpe put a bit more pressure on goal in the second half, firing six shots at the Major goal. It was Millsaps who broke through first, though, tallying a goal in the 80th minute.
