Deriso leads as Oglethorpe smashes records at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – As the end of indoor season approaches, the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels smashed personal and school records at the Samford Bulldog Open on Saturday.

Men's Highlights

  • Ashton Deriso smashed a school record by winning the 800m with a time of 1:54. He now ranks No. 41 in the country for the event. 
  • Stephen Graffius placed second in the 3000m with a personal record time of 8:48. He also took 14th in the mile with a time of 4:26. 
  • Zachary Benner took fifth in the 3000m with a new PR time of 8:50. Beck James clocked in at 8:58 and grabbed 13th place for the event.
  • Anthony Bonds placed 13th in the 60m with a time of 7.29. He also recorded a new PR in the 200m.
  • Rainey Morris placed 14th in high jump with a final mark of 1.85m.
  • The team is currently ranked 20th in the NCAA Division III South region.

Women's Highlights

  • Evan Thomas finished 18th in the 60m with a new personal best time of 8.34. She also recorded a new PR in the 200m. 
  • Riley Michaud recorded a new personal best in the 400m with a time of 1:09.

Meet Notes

  • SAA members Berry, Birmingham Southern, Millsaps, Hendrix and Rhodes also competed.
  • Oglethorpe faced several NCAA Division II schools including Shorter and Tuskegee.
  • NCAA Division I schools including host Samford, Alabama State, Georgia Southern, Kennesaw State and Austin Peay also competed.
  • Daniel Bogard recorded new PRs in the 60m and 200m.
  • Keyont'e Simmons recorded a new PR in the 60m.
  • Jeremy Anderson recorded a new personal best in the 400m.
  • Anthony Arredondo set new PRs in the 3000m and the mile.

Up Next

The Stormy Petrels will compete in the Southern Athletic Association Indoor Championships on Friday-Saturday, Feb. 23-24, in Danville, Kentucky. The outdoor season will begin at Berry's Victor Icebreaker on Saturday, March 2.
