SAA crowns more Petrels champion at inaugural meet

DANVILLE, Ky.—After Zachary Benner claimed the 5000-meter title Friday night, Oglethorpe's Ashton Deriso in the 800 meters and Stephen Graffius in the 3000 meters followed suit with titles of their own as the Stormy Petrels wrapped up the second and final day of the Southern Athletic Association Indoor Championships on Saturday. Oglethorpe placed fourth as a team on the men's side and fifth on the women's side.

The second day was marked by plenty more of the same success the Petrels earned Friday, including several more podium finishes and record setters to go along with the freshly crowned conference champions.

Men's Results

  • Deriso's winning time in the 800 meters was 1:56.83. It was one of three events the junior competed in as he helped the DMR take runner-up Friday and the 4x400 relay take fourth on Saturday.
  • Deriso was a hair off his own Oglethorpe indoor record in the 800, set at 1:56.68 in 2022.
  • Graffius's winning time in the 3000 meters was an Oglethorpe record 8:45.94.
  • Benner, who won Friday's 5k for Oglethorpe's first indoor SAA title at the inaugural meet, also picked up points in the 3000 meters by taking seventh.
  • Graffius did double duty on the day with a third-place finish in the mile, clocking in at 4:26.62. Beck James took eighth in 4:31.97.
  • Anthony Bonds followed up his big day Friday night advancing through two prelims to find success in Saturday's finals. He took third in the 60 meter dash in an Oglethorpe record 7.08 before earning sixth in the 200 with a time of 23.25.
  • Friday's DMR team included Graffius, Ugohnofure Awarieta, James and Deriso who took runner-up in a school record 10:20.73.
  • Jeremy Anderson, Antonio Fuentes, Awarieta and Deriso came through on Saturday with a fourth-place finish in the 4x400 meter relay.

Women's Results

  • Aubrey Guyden had the top result for the Stormy Petrels with a fourth-place finish in the 60 meters.
  • Evan Thomas and Hailey Wright also scored points in the 60 meters before posting great results in the 200 a few minutes later. Thomas took seventh in the 60 meters and fifth in the 200 meters while Wright took sixth in the 60 and eighth in the 200.
  • Oglethorpe also had both its Friday and Saturday relays score points with a pair of sixth-place finishes. Elina Malancea, Thomas, Hannah Rhodes and Riley Michaud ran the DMR Friday to a time of 14:02.62, then Thomas, Wright, Rhodes and Michaud ran the 4x400 on Saturday in 4:35.68.
  • Wright secured Oglethorpe's initial points Friday in claiming eighth in both the high jump and long jump.
