Oglethorpe wraps SAA Championships with more stellar marks

CONWAY, Ark. - The Oglethorpe men's and women's track & field teams both moved up in the team standings on day two to finish fifth overall at the 2024 Southern Athletic Association outdoor championships. Junior Ashton Deriso topped the results on the men's side in winning the 1500 meters in an SAA championship record while Aubrey Guyden highlighted the women's side with all-conference recognition in the 100 meters.

All-SAA Honorees

Men's Day Two Highlights 

  • Deriso won the 1500m with a school and SAA record time of 3:54 and took third in the 800m with a time of 1:56.
  • Beck James placed third in the 5k with a PR time of 15:23.
  • Anthony Bonds took fourth in the 100m with a time of 10.82, moving up from his fifth place finish in the preliminaries on Friday.
  • Bonds also took eighth in the 200 to earn points in multiple events.
  • Zachary Benner, who earned fourth in Friday's 10k, returned to claim seventh in the 5k.
  • Stephen Graffius finished fifth in the 1500m at four minutes flat, setting a new career best.
  • Rainey Morris picked up a seventh-place finish in the high jump.

Women's Day Two Highlights

  • Guyden took third place in the 100m with a time of 12.27 and fourth in the 200m in 28.71.
  • Evan Thomas placed fourth in the 400m with a time of 59.62.
  • Hailey Wright took fifth in the high jump with a final mark of 1.55m. Wright was coming off an eighth-place finish in Friday's long jump.
  • Malia Melton took eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 9.71 meters.
  • Kirsten Wright had a pair of top-five finishes in the 100 and 200. She was fourth in the 200 in 25.77 and fifth in the 100 in 12.43.

Meet Notes | Other Personal Bests

  • Deriso broke his own school record by three seconds, which he already broke earlier this season.
  • Charlie Monroe recorded a new PR in the triple jump. 
  • Brandon Austin took 15th in the shot put and recorded a new personal best.  
  • Daniel Bogard recorded a new personal best in the 400m. 
  • Elina Malancea finished 11th in the 5000m. Malancea was a point-getter Friday as well after taking eighth in the 3k steeplechase.

Qualifiers will head to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field National Championships Thursday-Sunday, May 23-25, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
