Men's track & field grabs four titles at SAA Championships

DANVILLE, Ky.—The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels finished third at the 2025 Southern Athletic Association Indoor Championships with multiple conference champions.

Championship Highlights

  • Ashton Deriso racked up 20 points after winning both the 800 meters and the mile. He now has three first place finishes for the season.
  • Zachary Benner won the 5000m with a time of 15:17, setting a new PR and beating his own previous school record. He was also runner-up in the 3000m, setting another PR and school record. He earned 18 points and set new PRs in both events.
  • Deriso, Ugohnofure Awarieta, Antonio Fuentes and Beck James won the distance medley relay with a time of 10:25.
  • Jordan McQueen added 13 points and set new PRs in all three of his events. He was runner-up for triple jump with a 13.32m mark and placed fourth in the long jump.
  • Anthony Bonds finished sixth in the 60m and seventh in the 200m. His 60m time was 7.17 and his 200m time was 44.28.
  • James finished fifth in the mile with a time of 4:27, earning four points.
  • Jaylon Taylor placed fifth in high jump with a 1.77m mark and seventh in the triple jump, earning six points overall.
  • Rainey Morris placed sixth in the high jump, just 0.05 meters short of Taylor's mark.
  • Anthony Arredondo finished seventh in the 5000m with a PR time of 15:58.
  • Awarieta placed eighth in the 800m with 2:02.
  • Charles Waller was eighth in the shot put after reaching 12.46 meters.
  • Brycen Sterling, Awarieta, James and Fuentes combined for a 3:43 finish in the 4x400m relay.
  • Altogether, the team earned 87 points.

Meet Notes

  • Cristo Martinez and Keyonte Simmons recorded PRs in the 60m.
  • Arredondo also set a PR in the 3000m.
  • Jaylon Taylor made his Oglethorpe debut.
  • The previous indoor 3000m record was set by Stephen Graffius '24 last season.
  • The women's team placed fourth.

The outdoor season will begin with Berry's Victor Icebreaker on Saturday, March 8. The NCAA Indoor National Championships will be held March 14-15 in Rochester, New York.
