ROCHESTER, N.Y.—After becoming Oglethorpe's first indoor national qualifier, senior Ashton Deriso further secured his spot in the history books by earning a top-10 finish and all-American status with another 800-meter school record Friday afternoon at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships.
Deriso's time of 1:52.96, only 0.59 seconds off qualifying for the final, topped his own school record in the event and helped him take third in his heat and 10th overall in the national field.
Deriso entered the event fresh off earning Southern Athletic Association indoor track athlete of the year earlier this week after setting numerous Oglethorpe records and personal bests at the conference championships. He helped garner 30 points for the Petrels with titles in the 800, mile and distance medley relay, which he anchored in running the mile leg.
Deriso also was a cross country national qualifier last fall, becoming Oglethorpe's fourth/fifth NCAA cross country qualifier along with junior Zachary Benner.
