ATLANTA—After breaking the Southern Athletic Association all-time scoring record and leading the Oglethorpe women's basketball team to two road wins to finish the regular season, senior guard Keimarya Rivera was named SAA athlete of the week for the sixth time. The SAA made the announcement Monday afternoon.
Rivera needed only 14 points in the first game of the week to break the record, and she did that in the closing minute of the third quarter. It was a tie game at that point, and Rivera finished the fourth quarter with eight more clutch points to help Oglethorpe pull away. She finished with 23 points and seven rebounds.
Two days later, Rivera followed that up with a 24-point, 12-rebound effort in an upset win over Millsaps in the regular-season finale, marking her 11th double-double of the year. It helped the Stormy Petrels finish the season with four straight wins and climb to a share of second in the final SAA standing.
The award was Rivera's sixth of the season and 12th of her career. She now stands at 1,732 career points, fourth all-time at Oglethorpe, and has posted 38 career double-doubles.
Rivera and the Petrels have finished the regular season and will turn their attention to the postseason, where they are set to face Berry in Rome, Georgia, on Thursday. A win would move them to the semifinals where they would face top-seeded Trinity. Oglethorpe and Berry split the regular season with each winning on their home court.
