Hower, Smallwood sweep SAA weekly honor

ATLANTA—Tyler Hower and Evan Smallwood of the Oglethorpe baseball team have earned recognition as Southern Athletic Association athletes of the week after leading the Stormy Petrels with dominating efforts in a series win over Berry College this past weekend.

Hower, who won weekly honors for the second time this season, pitched seven strong innings, holding the Vikings to two hits with only one run scored. It was his first start of the year, and the junior right-hander tossed a complete game as Oglethorpe put the run rule into effect after seven.

Hower's only run of the game came on a groundout in the third inning. It was a 3-1 game through three innings and a 5-1 game through five innings until Oglethorpe pulled away in the sixth and seventh. Hower previously was one of the team's top relievers through the first 28 games, leading the team with four saves which leads the SAA.

Smallwood, a winner of the weekly award for the first time, recorded a season high with three RBIs, while adding three runs and one home run. He posted multihit games in all three contests, tallying eight hits in 12 at-bats. Smallwood went 3-for-3 in the first game on Saturday and 2-for-5 in Sunday's rubber game. He struck out only once in 15 plate appearances.

The Petrels now sit at No. 3 in the SAA with a 9-6 record in conference play. The team will travel to Danville, Kentucky, to face Centre College over the weekend before returning home on Tuesday, April 28, to take on Emory University at 6 p.m.
