Hower wins SAA athlete of the week after strong week in relief

ATLANTA—Oglethorpe senior right-hander Tyler Hower has been voted the Southern Athletic Association athlete of the week for his pitching efforts in helping the Stormy Petrels top Millsaps in a three-game series this past weekend. The SAA office made the announcement Monday afternoon for the week ending April 5.

Hower was lights-out out of the bullpen in two appearances over the weekend, picking up his third and fourth save of the year as Oglethorpe won the series two games to one.

Hower threw 2.2 perfect innings in game one, closing the door on a 6-4 series-opening win. He entered with one out in the seventh with the Petrels ahead just 5-4. The tying run was at third and go-ahead run was at second, but Hower coaxed an infield popout then a groundout to escape the threat. Hower then retired the side in order on eight pitches in the eighth and struck out the last two in a perfect ninth.

Millsaps tied the series in the middle game but Hower and the Petrels responded with a win in the rubber game. Hower entered this one in the seventh, striking out two in a perfect seventh, leaving a base hit stranded at first in the eighth, then working around a hit batter and walk in a scoreless ninth.

Hower struck out five, walked one, and allowed one hit and no runs across his 5.2 innings of relief during the series.

Oglethorpe is back in action Tuesday for a 4 pm. game against Huntingdon. The team hits the road for Rhodes over the weekend.
