Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team played Berry to a 0-0 tie Saturday afternoon on Salamone Field.
After today's game, Berry and Oglethorpe remain tied at 4-1-2 in SAA play. That ties the two teams for second place in the SAA behind Millsaps, who won the outright SAA regular-season title Saturday night. Berry has the tiebreaker over Oglethorpe for seeding in the SAA Tournament, however, by virtue of their victory over fourth-place Centre earlier in the season. Oglethorpe, by comparison, tied Centre 0-0 in their game with the Colonels. As a result, the Petrels hold the No. 3 seed in the SAA Tournament. The second tiebreaker after head-to-head competition is comparative record against descending teams in the standings, and the two teams had identical results against Millsaps.
After a first half in which the Petrels outshot the visiting Vikings 7-5, the two teams both tried to get the game-winning goal in the second half. There were numerous chances on goal from both teams, with Berry outshooting the Petrels 11-7. In the second period of extra time, Oglethorpe laid siege to the Viking goal with seven shots, but unfortunately could not find the back of the net.
For the game, the Stormy Petrels outshot the Vikings 21-17, 6-3 on goal. Meanwhile, the Petrels attempted seven corner kicks to Berry's six.
Oglethorpe freshman goalkeeper Vaughn Moore preserved the tie with three saves over the course of the game.
The afternoon marked Senior Day for the Stormy Petrels, as they honored the careers of defender Nikos Papanikolopoulos, forward Nick Williamson, midfielder Sean King, defender Justin Graves, defender Joe Buschini and midfielder Kai Street.
With the tie, the Petrels finish the regular season 8-3-3, 4-1-2 in SAA play. With the No. 3 seed, the team will take on No. 6 seed Sewanee Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time in the SAA Tournament quarterfinals in Conway, Ark. If they win, they'll likely be on a collision course for a rematch with No. 2 seed Berry in the semifinals on Saturday.
