Men's Soccer Defeats Sewanee, 2-0, in SAA Quarterfinals

Box Score

CONWAY, Ark. - The Oglethorpe men's soccer team defeated Sewanee, 2-0, in the SAA quarterfinals Friday night in Conway, Ark. They now advance to the semifinals, where they'll take on Berry at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time Saturday.

The Petrels got off to a great start and rode that through to the 2-0 victory. After a first 10 minutes where neither team had any clear-cut chances, the Petrels got on the board in the 12th minute, when freshman midfielder Gustavo Martinez collected a poor Sewanee clearane off a corner kick at the top of the box and fired a wicked shot past the Sewanee goalkeeper for his second goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.

The second goal came soon after off another Petrel corner kick. This time, Sewanee failed to clear the ball properly and senior defender Nikos Papanikolopoulos headed the ball down into the path of freshman defender Justin Stoessel, who nodded the ball into the back of the net for his first career goal. The Petrels had all the offense they would need.

In the second half, Sewanee threw numbers forward to try and work their way back into the game, but they were continuously denied by the Oglethorpe defense and by freshman goalkeeper Vaughn Moore, who made three saves on the night, including an acrobatic one early in the second half on a shot that could have turned the game around.

For the game, the Petrels outshot the Tigers 8-7, including 4-3 on goal. In addition, the Petrels took six corner kicks to Sewanee's none, which played a big part in the outcome given that both Petrel goals came off of corner kicks.

With the win, the third-seeded Petrels improve to 9-3-3 on the season. Their matchup against second-seeded Berry in the semifinals will serve as a tiebreaking game of sorts. The two teams tied 0-0 last weekend at Salamone Field and finished tied for second in the SAA standings with identical 4-1-2 league records.
