Box Score The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team suffered its third conference loss of the season Friday afternoon, falling to visiting Hendrix, 15-8, at the new Oglethorpe Track and Field.
The Petrels were undone by a fourth quarter in which they were outscored 4-0. The Petrels trailed just 11-8 entering the final period after getting a goal from an unlikely source in freshman midfielder David Manor with less than a minute remaining in the period. It was his first career goal. However, they failed to score again after that, and Hendrix pulled away with their four-goal fourth quarter.
Oglethorpe's 11-7 third-quarter deficit tied their largest of the game until the fourth quarter. They found themselves down 7-5 at halftime, and down 8-5 with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter. However, junior attackman Arness Holsey tallied a goal to bring the Petrels back to within two goals, 8-6, with 6;15 remaining in the third quarter.
Hendrix scored two goals in a row to take a 10-6 lead, but Holsey scored again to draw the Petrels to within 10-7 with 3:44 left in the quarter.
Oglethorpe held three separate one-goal leads in the first quarter. Sophomore attackman Jake Godwin buried the first goal off an assist from senior midfielder Maseo Brown, giving the Petrels an early 1-0 lead. They took a 2-1 lead when freshman midfielder Matt Hardwick scored with 9:59 left, then took a 3-2 lead when junior attackman Dylan Stanley did so with 6:27 left in the quarter. The two teams finished the opening quarter tied 3-3.
Hendrix got some separation in the second quarter, as they took a couple of three-goal leads. First, they scored three in a row to take a 6-3 lead, then after Holsey scored with 4:37 remaining in the half to draw the Petrels to within two, the Warriors took a 7-4 lead with 3:35 left in the half. Oglethorpe answered with 24 seconds remaining in the period, as Jake Godwin scored the late goal to pull the Petrels to within two again, 7-5, at halftime.
Hendrix outshot Oglethorpe 44-30, including 30-16 on goal, and turned the ball over just 18 times to Oglethorpe's 25. They picked up 38 ground balls to Oglethorpe's 29, and were 2-of-6 on extra-man opportunities to Oglethorpe's 0-for-4.
Holsey led the Petrels with three goals on a whopping 19 shots. Godwin scored an efficient two goals on two shots. Junior goalkeeper Cooper O'Brien saved 16 of the 30 shots he faced.
The Petrels fall to 2-9 on the season, 0-3 in SAA play. They will be back in action Sunday, when they take on Rhodes at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day for the Petrels, and the squad will be honoring senior Nick Pizzo.
