Box Score The Oglethorpe baseball team made quick work of Rust Thursday afternoon, defeating them via the 10-run rule, 13-1 in seven innings.
The Petrels started their afternoon by scoring two in the first. With one out, shortstop Spencer Transue walked and right fielder Nick Manai doubled to put runners at second and third. Catcher Jeff Brothers followed with a sacrifice fly to center in his only plate appearance of the game, scoring Transue and giving the Petrels a 1-0 lead. Oglethorpe scored the second run on a Rust error. The Petrels added an additional run in the third, when Manai reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on another Rust error.
Meanwhile, Oglethorpe pitchers completely shut Rust down over this period, allowing just one hit over the first five innings.
In the fifth, the Petrels finally broke the game open by scoring thee more runs. Center fielder Vernon Trice led off the inning with a bunt single, and advanced to third on a Rust error. Transue delivered a sacrifice fly to bring him home and give Oglethorpe a 4-0 lead. Then, Manai and backup catcher Hunter Riley started a new rally with back-to-back doubles, scoring another and extending the lead to 5-0. After another Rust error, designated hitter Jake Purcell came through with an RBI groundout to score Riley and give the Petrels a commanding 6-0 lead.
In the sixth, Oglethorpe began to pile on the runs, bagging seven more. During the inning, the Petrels got a two-run double from Riley; RBI singles from Trice, third baseman Keith Dearden, and second baseman Alex Atteberry; and an RBI groundout from Manai.
The Petrels closed out the visiting Bearcats in the seventh to enact the 10-run mercy rule.
David Langhan picked up the win in relief for the Stormy Petrels, his first of the season. He allowed no runs and one hit over his single inning of work, striking out a batter, as well. Justin Thigpen got the start, allowing just a walk in his two innings of work, striking out four Bearcat hitters.
Riley had an excellent day off the bench, going 2-for-3 with two doubles, four RBIs and two runs scored. Trice went 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI, two runs and two stolen bases, while Manai went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, three runs and a stolen base.
The win improves the Petrels to 9-20 on the season. Though a second game was scheduled for this afternoon, it has been canceled due to impending storms. The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at 1 p.m. Then, the Petrels will travel up to Sewanee to take on the Tigers in a three-game SAA series Saturday and Sunday.
