Box Score 2 The Oglethorpe baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Rust Friday afternoon with a sweep of the day's doubleheader, winning Game 1 19-2 and taking Game 2 15-3 on Anderson Field.
In Game 1, the Petrels fell behind the visiting Bearcats 1-0 in the first, but came back with two in the bottom half of the inning to grab a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish. Shortstop Spencer Transue walked, center fielder Nick Manai singled, and catcher Jeff Brothers doubled to load the bases with nobody out. After a Rust double play, right fielder Casey Innis came through with a two-run double to give the home side the lead.
Oglethorpe added an additional run in the second when left fielder Alex Atteberry doubled and first baseman Joey McAlpin followed with a RBI single to extend the Petrels' lead to a two-run bulge.
The flood gates opened in the third, though. The Petrels scored 11 runs on five hits and four Rust errors. Ten of the 11 runs went as unearned. After Brothers scored on an error, second baseman Billy Mayberry scored a run with a fielder's choice-RBI to make it 5-1. A sacrifice fly from McAlpin made it 6-1, then Manai came through with a bases-loaded, two-run single. Another run scored on two Rust errors on the play, and the rout was on. Brothers doubled down the left-field line as the next batter, scoring another, and designated hitter Cory Leff singled in yet another the batter after that. Doubles from Innis and Mayberry rounded out the inning's RBI hits. When the frame was finally over, the Petrels had a 14-2 lead.
Cody Campbell picked up the win for the squad, allowing two runs on seven hits over four innings, striking out three and walking two.
Innis went 2-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and two runs scored, while McAlpin went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly, three RBIs and a run. Manai went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs.
In Game 2, the Petrels broke it open earlier, scoring five runs in each of the first three innings, and batting around in each of those innings.
In the first, after the visiting Bearcats had taken another 1-0 lead, third baseman Keith Dearden started the scoring with a sacrifice fly that he would reach on as the Rust outfielder dropped the ball. The Petrels scored two more on another error, then got back-to-back RBI doubles from catcher McAlpin and left fielder Atteberry to take a 5-1 lead.
In the second, Dearden laced an RBI single to left-center and first baseman Casey Tuttle homered over the right field wall, a three-run shot that gave the Petrels a 9-1 lead. Atteberry added an RBI single to round out the inning, giving the Petrels a 10-1 lead after two.
In the third, Oglethorpe scored four runs on Rust errors, one of which Tuttle picked up an RBI on, as the play would've resulted in an RBI groundout without the error. McAlpin delivered an RBI single for the fifth run of the inning, giving the Petrels an unbeatable 15-1 cushion.
Kolin Zimmer delivered a complete game and picked up the first win of his career, allowing three runs on five hits, striking out five and walking three.
Tuttle went just 1-for-3, but delivered a home run, a walk, four RBIs, two runs and a stolen base. Trice went 2-for-2 with a triple, a stolen base and two runs scored, while Dearden, McAlpin and Atteberry all went 2-for 3. Dearden had a double, a sacrifice fly, two RBIs and three runs; McAlpin had a double, two RBIs and two runs; and Atteberry had a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
The wins improve the Petrels to 11-20 on the season. They play Sewanee in a three-game SAA series this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader in Sewanee, Tenn., gets underway at 1 p.m. Eastern, and Sunday's single game also gets started at 1 p.m. Eastern.
