No. 21 Men's Basketball Team Bounces Back with 82-69 Victory Over Sewanee

Box Score

The 21st-ranked Oglethorpe men's basketball team bounced back from a tough loss on Friday night with a solid performance Saturday night in Dorough Field House, leading to an 82-69 victory over Sewanee.

The win improves the Stormy Petrels to 15-2 on the season, 5-1 in SAA play. It also assures them of at least a share of second place in the SAA after Sunday's action.

Playing without injured starter Drew Patrick, the Petrels overcame another rough start to dominate the paint in the second half. They outscored the visiting Tigers 44-16 in the paint for the game, and 32-8 in the second half. They also shot the ball well, draining 53 percent of their shots from the field, including 68 percent in the second half.

To start the game, though, the Tigers got out to a 5-0 lead, then pushed it to eight, 18-10, with 10:42 remaining in the half. For their part, the Petrels were having a similar start to the one they had Friday night against Centre, as nothing seemed to be falling. A 10-4 run during the latter part of the half put the Tigers up by a game-high 10 points, 31-21, with 4:54 remaining in the period. However, Sewanee would not score for the half's final four minutes and the Petrels went on a 9-0 spurt during that time, cutting their deficit to 33-32 at the halftime break.

Over the course of the first half, the Petrels shot just 37 percent to Sewanee's 44 percent. The Tigers drained eight 3-pointers for a 50 percent success rate overall while Oglethorpe shot just 25 percent from beyond the arc for the period. Sewanee's bench also outscored the Petrels' 12-4.

However, everything changed in the second half. The Petrels picked up where they left off at the end of the first, taking a 4-point lead early in the half, then trading baskets with the Tigers for the next six minutes. With the game tied 43-43, the Petrels pushed ahead with a 6-point run. They took a 49-43 lead with 11:57 to play. Though Sewanee whittled that back down to 53-51 with 9:20 to play, the Petrels were about to go on the game-clinching run.

Over the next eight minutes, the Petrels embarked on a 21-8 run. By the end of it, the home side found themselves up 74-59 with 1:23 left and the game was virtually over. The Petrels hit free throws down the stretch to ensure the victory.

In addition to the huge disaparity in points in the paint, the Petrels' 68 percent shooting rate in the second half compared with Sewanee's 31 percent rate. Sewanee also hit seven 3-pointers in the half, but their percentage dropped to 37 from 50 percent in the first half. Also, the Petrels completely turned the bench disparity around, outscoring the Tigers 10-2 off the bench in the second half.

Junior guard Alex Davis scored 14 points in the second half on 7-of-9 shooting, most of them on repeated drives to the hoop. Junior center Jordan Kinney added 12 points on 6-of-8 shooting over the course of the stanza.

For the game, Kinney finished with 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting and 6-of-7 at the line, while sophomore forward Victor Rohlfs put forth another double-double, scoring 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting and grabbing 12 rebounds. Davis finished with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting.

For the game, the Petrels outshot the Tigers 53-to-37 percent and outscored them 12-4 on the fast break.

The Petrels will next be in action Friday night, when they welcome Millsaps into Dorough Field House at 8 p.m. Birmingham-Southern follows Sunday at 3 p.m. before the Petrels hit the road the next weekend.
