Box Score The Oglethorpe men's soccer team fired 20 more shots and took nine more corner kicks than the eighth-seeded Sewanee Tigers in the SAA quarterfinal matchup between the two teams Saturday afternoon at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. However, Sewanee was able to hold on for a 0-0 tie through 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime, then knock off the top-seeded Stormy Petrels 4-2 in the penalty kick shootout, eliminating the home side from postseason play. It's a bitter end to a great season for the Petrels, as they wind up their SAA regular season championship campaign with a 10-3-3 record after Saturday's game officially ended in a tie.
The Petrels began taking it to the Tigers from the outset, outshooting them 10-1 over the course of the opening period and taking six corner kicks to the visitors' one. The Petrels put just a single shot on goal over the course of the opening period, but they seemed to be on the right track in search of the game's opening goal.
Sewanee was able to fire five shots in the second period and force Oglethorpe senior goalkeeper Vaughn Moore into a pair of saves, but the Petrels continued to see the better of the chances, repeatedly attacking the Sewanee goal, firing 13 shots and putting five on goal over the course of the second half. The Petrels had several shots go just wide of the goal or just over the top of the crossbar, though, and were unable to find a goal. The Petrels also had a couple of chances with the ball loose in the Sewanee penalty area, but the Tigers somehow found a way to keep the ball out of the back of the net.
The game remained scoreless into the two overtime periods. The Petrels fired four shots to Sewanee's one over the course of the extra frames, putting one of them on goal. That one came with seconds left in the second overtime period, with senior forward Nick Muntean attempting to redirect a shot past Sewanee goalkeeper Will Merriman. Merriman was able to secure the save and send the contest into the shootout, though.
In the shootout, the Tigers scored on all four shots they took. Freshman midfielders Arturo Hernandez and Topher Marshall scored for the Petrels, but Merriman was able to stop a pair of Petrel attempts for the 4-2 shootout victory.
Over the course of the game, the Petrels outshot the Tigers 27-7, including 7-2 in shots on goal. They also took 13 corner kicks to Sewanee's seven. Marshall led the Petrels with seven shots, putting three of them on target. Muntean and junior midfielder Gustavo Martinez fired four each.
"That's about as tough a way to end your season as one can imagine," said Head Coach Jon Akin. "When you outshoot your opponent by 20, you don't expect to lose that game, but soccer is sometimes like that. Give Sewanee credit for what they did defensively and for their performance in the shootout. It's a tough way for our seniors to go out."
Despite the loss, the Petrels end their season with a 10-3-3 record and a 5-1-1 mark in SAA play. Their SAA regular season title is the third conference title of any kind in the last five years for the Oglethorpe men's soccer program and the first-ever regular season crown.
