The Petrels got the scoring started late in the first half, when Annan got on the end of a flicked-on header from junior defender Jordan Locke off a cross into the box. Annan lofted a header of his own over Sewanee goalkeeper Will Merriman and into the net for a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute.
Still up 1-0 after halftime, the Petrels started extending their advantage in the second half. They doubled their lead when Marshall hit a beautiful free kick past Merriman in the 58th minute, giving his team a 2-0 edge. Marshall fired three shots total, while Alvarez and Annan each shot two. Whelan recorded four saves en route to his shutout.
"This was a solid team win for us today," said Oglethorpe head coach Jon Akin. "It was good to see us put in three goals and Luke put in an excellent effort for his second shutout. We're now 2-0 in the league, which is exactly where we want to be and where we knew we could be after our really difficult early-season schedule. We'll try to keep the momentum going next week."
The Petrels will be back at the Oglethorpe Track and Field next week when they host Rhodes at 7 p.m. Friday and then go against Hendrix at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
