Box Score The Oglethorpe men's basketball team got their fifth win in their last six games Sunday at Dorough Field House, controlling the game throughout in a 77-68 victory over the Rhodes Lynx. The win improved Oglethorpe to 8-6 on the season overall and 2-1 in SAA play.
The teams went back and forth early, with the game tied at 11-11 at the 13:50 mark of the first half. The Stormy Petrels reeled off 6 points in a row, though, taking a 17-11 lead with 11:45 on the clock. A 10-0 run later in the half extended the Oglethorpe advantage to 33-21 with just over 4 minutes left until halftime. The home side finished the half with 6 consecutive points to take a 42-29 lead into the halftime break.
Oglethorpe continued to extend their advantage early in the second half, outscoring the Lynx 8-2 over the opening 2:30 to take a 50-31 lead with 17:30 left. The 19-point advantage proved to be the Petrels' largest, and their full run totaled 17-4 over 5 minutes bridged over halftime. Rhodes began fighting their way back into it, outscoring Oglethorpe 14-1 over 3:30 to cut the lead down to just 6 points, 51-45, with 13:45 left. The Petrels quickly extended their lead back out to 10, though, and the two sides traded baskets for much of the rest of the way. A 3-pointer from junior guard Lane Foster secured the win with 1:30 remaining, giving the Petrels a 77-62 lead. The visitors made a couple of 3-pointers down the stretch to pull a little closer, but the Petrels cruised home with the 9-point win.
Both sides shot 44.1 percent from the field, and also converted at similar rates -- Rhodes 42.9 percent, Oglethorpe 41.7 -- from beyond the arc. The Petrels enjoyed a solid advantage at the free throw line, though, converting on 75 percent of their foul shots (15-for-20) to just 4-for-11 for Rhodes. The Petrels outrebounded their opponent 40-30.
Junior forward Josh Cammon recorded a double-double on the afternoon, scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. He went 8-for-13 from the field, adding four steals and three assists. Junior guard Dimetri Chambers scored 26 points for the second consecutive game, going 8-for-15 from the field and 4-for-7 from 3-point range. Foster finished with 14 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. He went 5-for-10 from the field overall and 2-for-2 from long distance.
The Petrels will be back in action Friday, when they head to Tennessee to take on Sewanee at 9 p.m. Eastern. After that, they'll head to Danville, Kentucky, to battle Centre at 3 p.m. Sunday.
