An eventful weekend for men's basketball

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ROME, Ga. - Oglethorpe's men's basketball team picked up a win and a loss this weekend. Saturday evening's game against the LaGrange College Panthers ended in a loss for the Petrels with a final score of 89-75. Sunday afternoon's game saw a win against the Warren Wilson College Owls, with a final score of 100-73.

Chambers' career high puts Petrels back on winning track

Beginning with Sunday's win, the Petrels had a dominating score of 100-73 against the Owls of Warren Wilson. The game was led by Dimetri Chambers who had a career high, racking up 41 points, making this the eighth game of his career in which he scored over thirty points.

"Today was a good bounce-back win," Head Coach Philip Ponder said. "We didn't play our best yesterday, but it's always interesting to see how a team responds to a loss, and the guys did a great job coming back focused today. It's nice to get a win heading into the break."

The Petrels started out strong, with Chambers and Carlos Sone both making layups in the first minute. Oglethorpe dominated the first half, racking up 31 points against Warren Wilson's 18. Oglethorpe ended the first half of the game at 54-33.

The second half started in favor of the Petrels again, as Uba Ezigbo made a layup less than 20 seconds in. Oglethorpe played just as strong in the second half as the first, gaining over 20 more points to go ahead by an impressive 78-47.

Stanley Eze made a free throw with 6:44 on the clock to get the ball rolling again for the Petrels as they again scored 20 points in the last six minutes of the game. In the last thirty seconds of the game, Robert Reisman made the layup that put Oglethorpe into triple digits as the game ended with a score of 100-73.

Petrels first loss comes at hands of LaGrange

In Saturday's game against the LaGrange Panthers, the team was led by Lane Foster who scored 23 points, and Ezigbo and Sone who both made 13 points for the Petrels.

"Credit LaGrange on a well-played game," Ponder said. "They are tough to guard. We didn't have an answer for Brown, and they put shooters all around him. Our defense had been really good, but we couldn't get stops consistently. Offensively, we settled for too many threes and didn't shoot like we normally do."

Oglethorpe started off strong, with Foster making a jump shot hardly 20 seconds into the game. The first half was tight, but it unfortunately ended at 46-38 in the Panther's favor.

The continuation of the game mirrored the results of the first half, with the Petrels being just a few steps behind LaGrange. Despite a good effort, the first game of this weekend handed the Petrels their first loss of the season so far. The final score against LaGrange was 89-75.

Despite Saturday's loss, the Oglethorpe came back the next day for a dominating win that saw a career high for senior Dimetri Chambers.
