Elite high jumpers use Oglethorpe as training site for Tokyo 2020 Olympics

ATLANTA – Two of the best high jumpers in the United States selected Oglethorpe University to train prior to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Nicole Greene trained at Oglethorpe the week before finishing third at the Olympic trials in Eugene, Oregon, and U.S. Olympian Tynita Butts-Townsend selected Oglethorpe to train for two weeks before heading to Tokyo.

"We were extremely happy and honored to have these two very talented athletes practice at our facility over the last few weeks," said Oglethorpe cross country and track & field head coach Kirk Shellhouse. "I'm glad we were able to assist them in their training needs as they prepared for both the U.S. Championships and Olympics. We wish them all the best going forward!"

Butts-Townsend will compete in the semifinals of the high jump on Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 8:10 p.m. ET, with a spot in the finals on the line. The finals are set for Saturday, Aug. 7, at 6:30 a.m.

Greene and Butts-Townsend are both coached by Nicky Hudson, a two-time All-American, two-time Olympic trial competitor and former teammate of Oglethorpe assistant coach Tom Rentenbach.

"It was great to see Nicky Hudson again," Rentenbach said. "Seeing her coach and prepare the top women's high jumpers in the U.S. for the Olympic Trials and the Olympic Games was fantastic. Nicole and Ty are impressive to watch and inspirational women on and off the track. I am looking forward to seeing them again soon."
