Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. – For the first time in over a month, the Oglethorpe men's basketball team suffered defeat, dropping an 88-72 decision at Sewanee Friday night.
Dimetri Chambers led the way for the Stormy Petrels with 27 points.
Oglethorpe played Sewanee an even second half but dug a hole too deep in the first half after the Tigers used an 8-0 run to establish a large lead late in the period. The run from Sewanee was part of a 20-11 run they used to close the first half ahead by 16.
"We had a poor game on both sides of the court tonight," said Head Coach
Philip Ponder. "On top of that, Sewanee was really good tonight. There are no easy games in this league, and it's especially hard to win on the road. We have to put this one behind us and try to get the road split on Sunday."
Oglethorpe, which last lost on Jan. 7, gave up 88 points, a season high for its defense in Southern Athletic Association games. But, the Petrels still maintain the lead in the SAA with 10 wins, including a victory over Berry at nine wins.
Chambers' 27 points marked his 21st career game scoring 20 or more points. He added a career high 10 steals.
Lane Foster and
Ryan Jenei also made it to double figures for scoring with 11 and 10 respectively, Jenei adding seven rebounds.
Will Koch tallied nine points and six rebounds.
Oglethorpe will look to bounce back and return to its well-established winning track Sunday in another SAA game against Centre at 3 p.m. The Petrels defeated Centre 85-69 in the meeting earlier this season at home. Oglethorpe's regular season will close next week with a trip to Berry, with the potential for major postseason implications on the line.
