ATLANTA—Highlighted by a pair of Southern Athletic Association champions and one NCAA Championships qualifier and eventual all-American, nine Stormy Petrels from the Oglethorpe track & field program have been selected as all-region honorees. The list features three men in four events and six women in three events.
All-Region Selections
Edwards is fresh off an all-America second team performance at Saturday's NCAA Championships, where she jumped 11.56 meters in the triple jump which helped her finish 12th nationally. Fellow triple jumper Amirah Ali capped her indoor season one spot away from all-conference honors as she posted a fourth-place finish at the conference championships in February.
Zachary Benner and Evan Thomas took home SAA crowns in the 5000 meters and 400 meters, respectively, both earning all-conference first team as a result. Benner broke his own SAA Championships record in his event while Thomas took the SAA record and Oglethorpe record in her event. Thomas achieved all-region in multiple events as she also claimed the honor on the distance medley relay team.
Zeno Goss, a two-time SAA athlete of the week during indoor season, was another multievent honoree. He earned all-conference second team with a runner-up finish in the 400 meters and all-SAA honorable mention with a third-place finish in the 800 meters. Goss nearly posted a national mark in the 800 meters in a final qualifier one week prior to the national championships when he blistered the 800 with the 40th-best NCAA mark.
Jordan McQueen earned his all-region honor in the triple jump although he earned all-conference in both the triple and long jump. Both marks at the SAA Championships were Oglethorpe records.
Kirsten Rose, Thomas, Allyssa Hearn and Hannah Rhodes claimed all-region honors as Oglethorpe's distance medley relay (DMR) team that took third at the conference championships, enough for all-conference honorable mention. The group ran an Oglethorpe record 12:45, with Rose and Thomas returning the next day to help break Oglethorpe's 4x400 meter record in a fourth-place conference finish.
