Box Score The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team fell to Millsaps in Jackson, Miss., on Friday afternoon, losing 24-10.
The Petrels held their own through the first quarter of this one. Sophomore Jake Godwin and freshman Connor Moore started off the scoring for the Petrels, both finding the net within the first five minutes of the game off assists from juniors Arness Holsey and Dylan Stanley, respectively. The goals gave Oglethorpe a 2-0 lead, but it would be short-lived. Millsaps came back to tie the game and, in fact, take the lead with five minutes remaining in the quarter.
However, Oglethorpe tied the game up to end the first on another goal from Godwin off an assist from freshman Matt Hardwick, and they then took the lead back to start the second, sophomore Ben Caoili bagging an unassisted goal. The 4-3 lead would be the last the Petrels would enjoy all game.
They did tie it back up, 5-5, after Millsaps took the lead back, when junior Maseo Brown scored with 4:03 left in the half. But the home-standing Majors took a 9-5 lead at the half, then outscored the Petrels 11-4 in the third quarter. The Petrels got three more goals from Godwin and a goal from Holsey in the period, but it wasn't enough.
The Majors held a 20-9 lead entering the fourth quarter and put the game to bed, outscoring the Petrels 4-1 for the stanza. Holsey finished the scoring for the Petrels with his second goal of the game at the 4:06 mark of the period.
The Petrels were outshot 50-29 and committed 20 turnovers to the Majors' 11. Oglethorpe did pick up 37 ground balls to 33 for Millsaps.
Godwin finished with five goals on six shots, while Holsey scored two on nine. Caoili finished with 16 ground balls on the afternoon. Goalie Cooper O'Brien stopped 14 of the 38 shots on goal he faced.
The loss drops the Petrels to 2-12 on the season, 0-6 in conference play. Their last chance at a conference win comes Sunday, when they take on Birmingham-Southern 2 p.m. Eastern time in Birmingham, Ala.
