Box Score The Oglethorpe women's soccer team had a tough evening Saturday night, falling to the home-standing Centre Colonels, 5-0, in frigid Danville, Ky.
The two teams endured temperatures of around 40 degrees at game time with wind chills even lower. Centre got off to a good start, however, beginning the scoring in the third minute of action. They doubled their lead in the 14th minute and built it to 3-0 in the 34th. The 3-0 lead was the advantage they took into the halftime break. Centre outshot the visiting team, 15-1, over the course of the first half. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Craig was very busy over the course of the period, stopping eight Centre shots.
The Petrels improved their play a bit in the second half, as they were able to get four shots off and earn a pair of corner kicks. In addition, Craig made three more saves for a total of 11 on the evening in just under 80 minutes of play. However, she also allowed two more goals, one coming in the 54th minute, the other in the 59th.
For the game, Oglethorpe was outshot, 26-5, including a 16-3 mark in shots on goal. Centre took 11 corner kicks to Oglethorpe's two, the great majority of them coming in the first half. Junior midfielders Claire Stauber and Jessie Gregerson fired two shots each, putting one on goal apiece.
With the defeat, Oglethorpe finishes the regular season at 4-11, 1-6 in SAA competition. That mark puts them in seventh place in the SAA standings and earns them an SAA quarterfinal encounter with No. 2 seed Rhodes Friday at 5 p.m. That game and the entire SAA Women's Soccer Tournament will take place back in Danville, Ky., Friday through next Sunday.
