Box Score The Oglethorpe women's soccer team saw junior goalkeeper Sarah Craig stop shot after shot Friday evening, but in the end, it just wasn't enought to defeat a Rhodes team that was the No. 2 seed in the SAA and the eighth-ranked team in the South Atlantic region. The Stormy Petrels fell, 3-1, to the Lynx in the SAA quarterfinals in Danville, Ky.
Craig was the story for the Petrels, as she made 18 saves on the evening, surpassing her previous career high of 15 and breaking the previous SAA record of 17, set by teammate Bailey Evans in 2012. She made 10 saves in the first half and eight more in the second, keeping the Stormy Petrels in the game despite being outshot 32-5, including 21-3 on goal.
The Petrels did give up two early goals to put themselves behind the eight-ball, though. The Lynx tallied goals in the 12th and 17th minutes to take a quick 2-0 lead. From that point, Craig pretty much locked it down, giving the Petrels a chance to come back. Rhodes led 2-0 at the halftime break.
In the second half, Oglethorpe gave up a third goal in the 57th minute. However, they immediately struck back in the 59th. Junior midfielder Claire Stauber bombed a free kick into the back of the net to get Oglethorpe on the board. The goal was her fifth of the season for the Petrels and it cut the Rhodes lead to 3-1. Stauber fired a pair of shots on the evening, putting both on frame.
From there, Craig did not allow another goal and the Petrels frantically tried to work their way back into the game. They had a couple of quality chances to cut the deficit down to just a single goal, but the Rhodes goalkeepers were equal to the task.
Junior defender Hannah Kuhn was named to the SAA All-Tournament Team for her efforts on the evening.
"The girls fought hard against a great Rhodes team that just recently cracked the regional rankings," said Head Coach Alan Woods. "Claire scored a great goal in the second half, but we fell just short. However, I couldn't be more proud of the girls' effort."
With the loss, the Petrels finish the season with a 4-12 mark. The squad, which finished seventh in the SAA this season, should be back strong next season, as the team did not feature any seniors on the roster. The team will now prepare for next season with a renewed vigor, knowing they lose no players to graduation off of this season's roster.
