Men's Lacrosse Loses Close One to Millsaps, 11-10

Box Score

The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team went ahead by two goals early on in their game with SAA opponent Millsaps Friday night at the Oglethorpe Track and Field. Unfortunately, they could not hold on and lost in heartbreaking fashion in the end, 11-10.

The Stormy Petrels got off to a quick 2-0 advantage when Austin Anderson and Jake Godwin each tallied marks in the first quarter with Anderson assisting on Godwin's goal. The Petrels held their two-goal lead with 4:46 remaining in the period. The visiting Majors got a goal back, but Anderson buried another goal for the Petrels very late in the period, and Oglethorpe had a 3-1 lead after one quarter of play.

In the second, Millsaps scored twice in a row to tie the game 3-3, but the Petrels answered right back with two more of their own, as Vaughn Greene and Hunter Dutton each found the back of the net and gave the Petrels a 5-3 lead with 2:08 remaining. Millsaps picked up a goal very late in the half, but the Petrels still had a 5-4 lead going into the halftime break.

The Majors turned the game around in the second half, though, as they quickly scored three straight to start the third quarter and took a 7-5 lead with 10:37 left in the period. However, the Petrels answered back with three of their own to retake the lead, 8-7. Godwin scored his second while Arness Holsey buried back-to-back goals, and the Petrels had their one-goal lead back with 5:23 to go in the third quarter.

Millsaps scored twice more in the quarter to retake the lead, then opened the fourth quarter with another goal, making it 10-8 with 12:42 left. Dutton tallied a man-up goal for the Petrels to cut the lead to one, but with an extra-man oppotunity later in the period that featured a two-man advantage, the Petrels got nothing and gave up a man-down goal, falling behind 11-9. Dutton completed his hat trick with 1:04 remaining, drawing the Petrels back to within one, but Millsaps was able to hang on from there for the 11-10 victory.

Dutton scored three goals for the Petrels, while Godwin, Holsey and Anderson all added two apiece. Dutton and Anderson each contributed an assist. Dutton picked up seven ground balls and caused three turnovers. Eric Seymour scooped seven ground balls for the Petrels, as well. Goalie Cooper O'Brien made 15 saves on the night.

The Petrels were outshot 57-36, but only 26-20 on goal. The two teams played virtually even on faceoffs (Oglethorpe went 12-of-25) and ground balls (43-41 Millsaps). Oglethorpe was successful on 19-of-27 clear attempts, while Millsaps went 17-of-26. The Petrels were 1-for-4 on extra-man opportunities to Millsaps' 0-for-2, but committed 29 turnovers to the Majors' 23.

The loss drops the Petrels to 1-10 on the season (3-11 in all games), 0-6 in SAA play. They'll complete their regular-season schedule with a Sunday home tilt against Birmingham-Southern at 1 p.m.
