Box Score The Oglethorpe women's soccer team scored the opening goal against Millsaps Sunday afternoon at the Oglethorpe Track and Field, but the visiting Majors put in three unanswered to pull away with a 3-1 win. The result drops the Stormy Petrels to 1-8 overall and 0-4 in SAA play.
The game got off to an excellent start when senior defender Katie Geiger sent a long ball down the center of the field and freshman forward Bailey Turner ran onto the end of it and calmly placed the ball past Millsaps goalkeeper Elise Davis for the 1-0 lead in the ninth minute. The marker was the first of Turner's career and the assist was the second of the season for Geiger.
However, the Majors turned around and equalized the score very quickly, as they picked up a goal of their own in the 10th minute, less then 60 seconds later. The two teams traded possession and goal-scoring opportunities for the remainder of the period, with Millsaps firing 12 shots and putting two on target over the course of the half and the Petrels firing five and putting four on goal.
The two teams went to the halftime break tied at 1-1, but Millsaps began to take control of the game as the second half unfolded. They quickly picked up the go-ahead goal directly off a corner kick in the 48th minute, then continued to put shots on the Oglethorpe net. Senior goalkeeper Sarah Craig made four saves over the course of the half and Millsaps fired 11 shots for the period.
The Petrels continued to push, though, looking for an equalizing goal of their own. They fired eight shots over the course of the second half and put six on target. However, Millsaps added a second goal in the 61st minute, extending their lead to 3-1. The Petrels never really recovered from that and Millsaps closed out the game.
The Oglethorpe goalkeeping tandem of Craig and fellow senior Bailey Evans combined for five saves on eight shots-on-goal faced over the course of the game. Both senior forward Emily Silva and junior forward Beatrice Menjor fired two shots and put both on target.
For the game, Millsaps outshot Oglethorpe 23-13 overall but the Petrels held a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal. Millsaps took three corner kicks to the Petrels' two and committed 13 fouls to Oglethorpe's seven.
"Obviously, it's disappointing to give up three straight goals after taking a lead," said Head Coach Alan Woods. "We've got a quick turnaround, though, with the midweek game on Tuesday. It's probably good that we get to quickly get back out there. We'll try to get a result on Tuesday before going on a difficult SAA road trip to Rhodes and Hendrix."
The Petrels will remain at home for the aforementioned midweek non-conference tilt this week. They'll take on Judson (Alabama) at 4 p.m. Tuesday from Salamone Field before embarking on the SAA road trip to Rhodes and Hendrix next weekend.
