Box Score The Oglethorpe women's soccer team fell in a hard-fought contest to the homestanding Hendrix Warriors Sunday afternoon, losing their final road game of the regular season 2-0 in Conway, Arkansas. The result drops the Stormy Petrels to 2-10 overall and 0-6 in SAA play.
Hendrix had the better of the game in the early-going, but the Petrels had a couple of chances to take an early lead. Senior midfielder Claire Stauber had an effort on goal thwarted in the first couple of minutes of the game. Overall, the Warriors outshot the Petrels 12-2 in the first half, but Oglethorpe senior goalkeeper Sarah Craig proved equal to the task several times, making four first-half saves. Despite those efforts, Hendrix took the lead in the 35th minute and held that 1-0 edge into the halftime break.
Oglethorpe senior goalkeeper Bailey Evans was injured when a Hendrix attacker crashed into her early in the second half, forcing Craig back into the game. She made four more saves in the second period, though, and continued to keep her side in the contest. The Petrels fired three shots in the second half and put a couple of them on goal, trying to find the equalizer. However, it would be Hendrix who would grab a second-half goal, as the Warriors doubled their lead in the game's 53rd minute. From there, it was difficult for the Petrels to work their way back into the game, especially after a red card issued to freshman forward Lauren Bacque put them down to 10 players. Hendrix was able to hang on for the 2-0 victory.
For the game, the Warriors outshot the Petrels 19-5, including 10-3 in shots on goal. Hendrix took four corner kicks to Oglethorpe's none, as well. Stauber led the Petrels in shots with three, putting two of them on goal. Craig finished with eight saves on the afternoon in just over 84 minutes of play.
"I was happy with the effort we showed today," said Head Coach Alan Woods. "We didn't give up at any point, which is a hallmark of our team. I was disappointed that Bailey got injured, but Sarah stepped up and played almost the whole game, keeping us in it throughout. We're looking forward to play a ranked team on Senior Day Friday. We'll need a big effort to have a chance against Centre, but I think we'll be ready for the moment. It'll be nice to have all our parents and fans there celebrating our seniors."
Senior Day will be against No. 16 Centre on the Oglethorpe Track and Field Friday at 5 p.m. After that, the Petrels will have one final home game next Monday against Talladega before heading back on the road for an SAA quarterfinal matchup Halloween weekend.
